Brandon Sugiyama is a wushu athlete, competitor and judge from the United States of America. He has competed on the USA Team at the World Wushu Championships, World Traditional Wushu Championships, World Taijiquan Championships and the Pan-American Wushu Championships. Brandon is a certified IWUF wushu judge and continues to practice wushu and taiji in New York City with Sifu Chen Ying.

Training Background

Brandon was first introduced to wushu by his college friend Daniel Wu at the University of Oregon in 1994. After college, he moved to the San Francisco bay area to continue training at Pacific Wushu with Sifu Phillip Wong and Sifu Zhang Hong Mei. In 2002, he quit his job to move to China and enrolled at the Beijing University of Physical Education to study wushu.  In 2011, he moved to Brooklyn where he now studies with Sifu Chen Ying.

Brandon first qualified to represent the United States in 1999 and competed as a member of the US Wushu Team at the World Wushu Championships in Hong Kong. He competed regularly in his home state of California and throughout the country in Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, Texas, Baltimore and Virginia. In 2004, he competed on the US Team at the 1st World Traditional Wushu Festival in Zhengzhou, China winning two gold medals in baguazhang and shuang gou and at the Pan-American Wushu Championship winning two gold medals in taijiquan and taijijian. In 2005, he retired from competition and took a break from practicing wushu and taiji. After returning to practice in 2011, he went on to compete on the US Team at the 6th World Traditional Wushu Championship in Jiuhuashan, China and at the 1st and 2nd World Taijiquan Championship.

Brandon has extensive judging experience and is a certified international judge by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) and a certified national judge by the United States of American Wushu Kungfu Federation (USAWKF).
